Palki ji, one of the hardworking head teachers we have worked alongside in Kullu, has sent us on some letters from the children at her school who have been able to go to school because of the generosity of all of FTL’s supporters. All of the them have done well and want to continue through to their next year with many of them flourishing in their school environment. Many have taken part in the local town’s cultural show, enjoyed the decent home cooking of the fantastic kitchen staff, made new friends and still been able to pass their exams. Whoop whoop and well done! Mark (one of our founders and trustees) will be going to visit in June.

We are now back from Katmandu with recharged batteries and a greater motivation to work together with our new colleagues in Nepal. In our time visiting the children’s clubs and schools scattered across Katmandu, and working with their facilitators we have only just begun to grasp the tasks involved in peace-building. Working with children and young people is an essential part of this process, SPACE (sfi) and RUWON clearly express this responsibility through the action and dedication they are taking day to day ensuring trusted support, freedoms and advocacy that their members have not previously experienced. Freedom to Learn very much hopes to expand it’s work into Nepal, fundraising and sponsoring such projects, and we would like to express our thanks to our Katmandu’s colleagues for the opportunity to do so.

We have been meeting with SPACE (Search for Identity) who are a Theatre for Development group working in Katmandhu and some of the mid-west rural areas of Nepal. Their focus is on education and peace building through drama and performance projects. So far it has been a mad dash around meeting their facilitators and some of the the young people who participate in their workshops. Over the coming days we will be working together in two of the schools they currently work in – will keep you informed…….
